Some fresh ideas picked up from Mother Nature
Jul 21, 2010Since moving to the English countryside from my city apartment in Lisbon, I’ve developed a new passion: picking and arranging flowers. Cut flowers are a great way to change the mood of a room – by adding one, or more, vases you can introduce colours, shapes and scents that can transform your home for a week or two.

I believe there are no rules as far as flower arrangements are concerned. I’m a big fan of garden flowers and I work with what nature has to offer on any given day. It’s an approach that makes me experiment with combinations I would never try if I had all the flowers in the world at my disposal… even weeds can make great cut flowers! I’m learning that British hedgerows and roadside verges (as well as back gardens) are full of charming, spontaneous flowers, such as the cheerful buttercup, the humble dandelion, the elegant poppy, the delicate cow parsley, the sculptural hogweed and, of course, plenty of foliage.

When it comes to containers, I say, anything goes! My husband studied chemistry so we have some lab containers lying around that I restyle. You can also re-use tins, bottles and jam jars. For a country feel, grab your teapots, enamel jugs and glass pitchers and fill them with flowers.

So what are you waiting for? Get creative with flowers! Check out my blog at www.saidosdaconcha.blogspot.com to see more of what my garden has been offering me lately.
